This morning while my daughter sat in the car waiting for me to take her to school, I dramatically strutted to the car with “Stayin’ Alive” blasting from my iPhone. I believe everyone should have theme music surrounding them like a live clip from a movie. As soon as I got in the car, I realized my keys were inside and proceeded to complain how my whole entrance was now ruined.
You have to love a child that tells you to wait in the doorway while she cues up your song…and…ok…wait for it…ok now go. Returning to the car to my music again the scene was saved.
We giggled thinking how shoppers in the grocery store isle would react to us strutting down the aisle for a bag of sugar. “You’d have to try it,” she challenged. It is tempting, but it would have to be in a city I don’t live in for both our reputations’ sake. I love this girl who is my partner in absolute craziness.
What is my song?
She and I try to pick ringtone songs that match the person. She of course is Lady Gaga, and so what did she pick for me?
Madonna? No.
Coldplay? No.
Sexy and I Know It by LMFAO? Yes! What?
Imagine her hanging out with a group a friends when “I’m Sexy and I Know It” plays from her phone. As she reaches to answer she mentions “Oh that’s my Mom calling.” I guess I should take this as a compliment?
This image amused her until the day I actual DID call and her friends were standing around. I heard a whispered, panicked voice say “OMG I forgot I had that ring tone! I was standing in the middle of the gym!”
Songs Make You Feel
It is funny how songs emit a personality, spirit, and mood like nothing else. One push of a button and your mood can sway in the opposite direction simply based on some notes.
Music fills my house
Here is the part where I do a little mom bragging so excuse me.
My son plays piano and violin, but my daughter plays piano, violin, drums, electric guitar, and now saxophone. She also annoyingly plays the kitchen counter if that counts. There are days where my house sounds more like a jazz club, and I love it! Jamming out to her playing Guns N’ Roses’ Sweet Child O’ Mine on the guitar, I’m her biggest fan.
After having the saxophone for only 2 months, here she is in last night’s duet with a friend. They both learned the song by ear…no music. I present “Stereo Hearts” by Gym Class Heroes. When she’s famous one day, you can say you saw her here first.
My good friend Karen mentioned that she is looking forward to our having front row seats to something in the future as my musician rocks a stage somewhere. I’ll being looking for that shirt that says “I’m With the Band” that I can tie up in a knot on the side all “groupie” style.

Oh man I used to play the saxophone. Alto sax, that is. Boy, I’m glad that’s over, lol!
Everybody needs a theme song, as was so well explained in the movie “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka”.
I’m glad you were able to bond with, and yet still embarrass, your daughter. That’s a real two-fer!
As for me, my theme song is “The Look of Love”, by Isaac Hayes. Not the whole thing, but about 4:30 in the lyrics drop out and it starts this slow, funky groove. It just keeps building up for the next few minutes until it’s just full on horns blasting and everything.
Sometimes I’ll be walking and I’ll have that song in my head, so I’ll start putting a little swag into it. Soon I’m walking like George Jefferson, but nobody knows why. It would probably look strange when played back on a security camera or something.
My them song used to be “Rock The Casbah” by The Clash, but when I finally figured out it was actually a political song and not about Mad Max I lost interest in being represented by it.
If life had a soundtrack and musical score those mundane everyday activities could really be punched up a lot!

“Like George Jefferson” LOL! That WAS an exaggerated swagger he had. Mine would be “Drop It Like It’s Hot ” except that seems to require some low moves and I just can’t do that many squatting moves (more than 3) and walk the next day so that seems counter productive…plus that is a bit obnoxious to try through the grocery store. It would probably come off more like the Beverly Hillbillies…so not cool.
She plays alto sax. I love it. I’m not a fan of jazz but I love the sound with her playing pop music.
I totally agree with you (and Ally McBeal) about having a theme song, but I wouldn’t be able to pick just one. I need a different song for different occasions, and I need to be able to change my mind regularly. So, for tonight, here’s my crazy, mixed up list of selections in no particular order:
Suavemente – Elvis Crespo
(dofollow)
Must Be Crazy for Me – Melissa Etheridge
Respect – Aretha Franklin
Mercy – Duffy
New Shoes – Paolo Nutini
The Story – Brandi Carlile
Lovin, Touchin’, Squeezin’ – Journey
I’ll Be Your Shelter – Taylor Dayne
Best of My Love – The Emotions
Already Gone – Eagles
Maybe – The Chantels
You Shook Me – AC/DC
U Got the Look – Prince
You Can Leave Your Hat On – Joe Cocker

oooo All good songs. You are right in you have to have a few to cover different situations.
Another summer day
Has come and gone away
In Paris and Rome
But I wanna go home
Mmmmmmmm
May be surrounded by
A million people I
Still feel all alone
I just wanna go home
Oh, I miss you, you know
And I’ve been keeping all the letters that I wrote to you
Each one a line or two
“I’m fine baby, how are you?”
Well I would send them but I know that it’s just not enough
My words were cold and flat
And you deserve more than that
Another aeroplane
Another sunny place
I’m lucky, I know
But I wanna go home
Mmmm, I’ve got to go home
Let me go home
I’m just too far from where you are
I wanna come home
And I feel just like I’m living someone else’s life
It’s like I just stepped outside
When everything was going right
And I know just why you could not
Come along with me
‘Cause this was not your dream
But you always believed in me
Another winter day has come
And gone away
In even Paris and Rome
And I wanna go home
Let me go home
And I’m surrounded by
A million people I
Still feel all alone
Oh, let me go home
Oh, I miss you, you know
Let me go home
I’ve had my run
Baby, I’m done
I gotta go home
Let me go home
It will all be all right
I’ll be home tonight
I’m coming back home
the pixies – where is my mind
Definitely one of the best songs ever made, I have it as a ringtone for over 3 years now. Some people give me weird looks when they first hear it, especially the begging, but I don’t really care, this song defines me a person.
Good one. Their sound reminds me of an 80′s/90′s band and I can’t put my finger on it. Not INXS but some band from around that same time.
Music must be the part and parcel of each and everyone’s life. When we are sad we listen to heartbreak songs. When we are happy we listen to pop and rock songs. In which ever situation of life we are in, music always comes to our rescue. It always keeps on playing in the background. My theme song is “Push the Tempo” as it always makes me feel happy. Thanks for sharing this interesting post.

If I’m dragging music can always pep me back up.
Music always gives comfort to our life. When we are very tired, music will help fresh our mood. Everyone likes music. Some people set a theme, which they regularly listen while driving or working or leisure time etc. In short I can say that music is everything.

Is that my boy Adam Levine’s song?? She played that after having that saxophone for 2 months? That is absolutely amazing!! That gives me chills. I love that. I have lots of theme songs and they are usually by Bobby Brown.

Love Bobby Brown! That’s Gym Class Heros’ song. I got corrected by her when I put the wrong song name. I’m terrible with remembering names of songs. Yes she’s amazing and plays 5 instruments.
As of late the theme song around my house has been the Lazy Song. “Today I don’t feel like doing anything… I just want to lay in my bed.” So how come we’re so busy?
I LOVE that you brag on your kids’ musical talent. We do that around here too. In fact this week my oldest is at rehearsals after school every night until 10 and then the school musical starts on Thursday. She’s in the pit orchestra for Les Miserables. And I can’t wait to see it!
You and your daughter sound a lot like me and mine. We have much the same sense of humor and luckily for her, she doesn’t embarrass easily. Because I would strut down the grocery aisle and not think a thing about it.
Love it!

It is so much fun having kids that play instruments. The house is always full of music. How fun being in the pit orchestra for a musical! Ha ha..I would strut down the isle if I thought no one was looking just to freak her out.
Sadly, my theme music tends to be whatever song I have stuck in my head from when I had the radio on during my drive to work or home, or wherever. If I had known this issue might pop up, I would have tried harder. Theme song fail.

Listening to music is my favorite past time activity than watching tv. I tend to listen whenever I’m doing something or even I’m just relaxing. Unfortunately, I haven’t thought of any theme song for my life. I simply enjoy the kind of music based on my emotion/feeling within the day, right at that very moment.

My theme song would has to be “My Adidas” from Run DMC back in the 80′s. I can do my mile walk listening to them and I tend to walk to the beat. No, I don’t stop and “cut a move”, but I do enjoy a few “running man” moves. I am so ghetto…LOL!
I remember being in high school listening to it on the way home on the school bus. Everyone was listening to them and rap was actually cool to listen to back them. Not what you hear now, but it is what it is.

Hey Melinda,
Hesham sent me over here from his latest CommentLuv post! I miss this place. You are one of the best Mom’s around and it’s so good to know that your children appreciate you. They are wonderful and your daughter is destined for musical stardom of some kind. Even if that means writing your next theme song. Hey I need her to write one for me too – cause I can’t think of one right now. I’m sure it will come to me when I’m in the shower or somewhere else that I don’t have access to a pen to write it down.
Miss you!

Goodness, I don’t really have a theme song, just certain songs that I like at certain times. I once wanted to claim Man In The Mirror by Michael Jackson but it’s a bit too solemn for a theme song. I thought about Piano Man years ago when I was playing every day but that seemed corny, and was taken. I love the song Walk Away by Donna Summer as the perfect walking song, of course. And my favorite song of all time is I Want You Back by the Jackson Five, but that’s not quite theme song material either.
I guess I’m stuck! lol

My theme of the moment is Space Oddity by David Bowie and I fibbed when I confirmed I was not an alien. Although I am trying to blend in among my Earth friends, it isn’t easy being green. Hey, that’s a theme song by Kermit the Frog.

Some says that music is the language of the soul but for me music is my life. I feel more relax and comfortable when I’m listening to music. It’s one of my stress free management. My theme song is all The Beatles songs . Yaahh They Rocks!!
Love this post!
When I’m driving home after a long day I end up listening to a song I feel is my “theme song” for that day on repeat…
Although, I have been listening to Journey a
lot lately!

I like only instrumental music, therefore my theme songs are songs from Secret Garden album. Maybe they’re rather sad and emotional but they’re just great, perfect music!
This is the first article of yours that I have read (thanks to Telling Dad). I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of a personal theme song.
However, I have come to realize that a theme can change daily, which is why I have since broadened my music collection.
Love, love, love the beautiful rendition of Stereo Hearts! Brava!
Your daughter is awesome. AND she plays all those instruments. AND taught herself to play one of my fave songs right now. TRIPLE awesome! And tell her I said so.
I wonder what my theme song would be. Hmmm… Party Rock, maybe? LOL. Or SHOTS!
LOL I like Party Rock! Thanks..she practices all the time and has gotten better since then.
My theme songs are all the songs from the instrumental album “Secret Garden”. When I’m feeling sad or depressed, I usually listen to these songs. It sounds weird when listening to sad music in sad mood but it does work on me. They help to calm me down.
